EU - who actually benefits?

The UK's richest 1% is on target to own two-thirds of all wealth by 2030. Foodbanks provide a lifeline to poor and working poor. The Tories continue to take a wrecking ball to the NHS and social provision. The EU's posted workers directive legitimises paying UK-based foreign workers slave wages.This horror has been a feature of life for the UK's working class since the crash 9 years ago while we have been full members of the neo-liberal EU.

Again the question is posed: Will those Remainers calling for a people's vote explain how the working class benefits from EU membership?

    British people who currently have the right to travel, live, work, study and receive free health care and benefits throughout the EU, British companies who have tariff and barrier free access to its markets, the people of Ireland, North and South, who have benefitted from an open border since both states joined the EU, and patients in NHS hospitals currently treated by staff from other EU countries?

      Sounds fair Matt. But as one who has travelled fairly extensively in Europe since the 1960s, leaving aside the Irish question which has its own history, I can recall those 'benefits' already applying. Also, the magnificent service delivered by the NHS has always relied on the tremendous contribution from immigrants from countries beyond the UK.

    "A union leader has launched a fresh attack against the government’s handling of Brexit, saying things have gone “badly wrong” for the country.

    TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady said workers need a new deal after years of being held back by cuts and stagnating pay.

    In her new year message, she called for Article 50 to be suspended and for the government to “step aside” and give the people a final say “one way or another”.

    She said: “The government’s handling of Brexit has been shambolic.

    “Theresa May’s deal doesn’t protect working people’s jobs and rights but, instead of offering a real alternative, the prime minister wants to bully the people of this country into backing her."
